Introduction for COMS Inter-Calibration

COMS (Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite) has been fully operating its own missions since the end of in-orbit test period in April 2011. COMS is a geostationary satellite, settled in longitude 128.2°E, performing the duties of meteorological and ocean observations and communications services.

The Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System(GSICS) is initiated in 2005 by WMO and the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites(CGMS). The purpose of the GSICS is to provide well-calibrated measurements of space-based observations for weather forecasting and climate monitoring. NMSC conducts calibration and research to produce accurate measurements of COMS MI(Meteorological Imager) as GSICS Processing and Research Center(GPRC).

Activities of NMSC for GSICS

NMSC has conducted inter-calibration for calibrating MI infrared channels which is based on the GSICS (Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System) Coordinate Center (GCC) Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document (ATBD). The hyperspectral Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) on the low Earth orbit Metop-A satellite are used as reference instrument.

For visible channel calibration, NMSC uses the various methods of vicarious calibration whose reference targets are ocean, desert, water cloud and deep convective cloud.
